Pressure Sand Filters are commonly used and are a very robust method in removing suspended solids from water. The filtration medium consists of multiple layers of sand with variation in size and specific gravity. The filter works by allowing water to percolate down through the beds of sand that trap particulates. Sand filters can be supplied in different sizes either hand operated or fully automatic. Sand filtration reduces bacteria, cloudiness, and organic levels thus reducing the need for disinfection and consequently, the presence of disinfection byproducts in the finished water. As Sand filters require little mechanical power, chemicals or replaceable parts, minimal operational training and periodic maintenance; they are the appropriate technology for isolated areas.
